You know we don’t go running around blindly with a knife in our hand down a flight of stairs.. But we will ride our horses with our reins akimbo, our feet out of the stirrups and our knees hooked over the saddle horn.
My question is why?
A horse is an explosive animal. Mother nature has built into the horse the best mechanism for dealing with fear of being eaten alive, To Buck and To Run. A horse will outrun a predator no problem, and if that predator is stupid enough to get close to a horse it will buck it into cinders…
As riders in order to remain safe, and prepared to support the horse we need to remember that.
In the kitchen, when we are chopping onions, or carrots as long as we stay focused on the knife and our hands, we don’t cut ourselves. The minute our attention wanders, or we get sloppy in our method well guess what. Off we go running around looking for a paper towel to stem the flow of blood from our hand..
Horse are the same way. If your attention wanders, your reins get akimbo, your feet pop our of the stirrups your heading for trouble. At all times you need to remember that the horse is like a knife, you need to keep your attention up, keep your gear organized because in an instant, that sleepy horse can turn into a cannon ball, or visa versa…
