Coming down hills is never easy for a young colt. I get it!! Yes they have to learn how to balance, they have to learn how to get the hind under them instead of charging down and then if it is raining they have to learn how to deal with the slippery slope... Horses I find dont like the sensation of sliding... bad..
Ok I get it...
I know with Phooka it took awhile. He learned how to charge down the hill, hell his pasture is a hill.. One huge hill!...
So when I got up on him to ride, what was his first instinct... It was to CHARGE... well I have to tell you this is a unsettling experience when your riding...VERY...
It takes awhile. Its a baby step at a time, but I know its worth it.. especially considering some of the hills we have to go down out here!!... Can you say boulders.. I mean literally you are going down hill across granite boulders... Ok at that point. you better know your horse... Really know em!
Lots of trust this little human is putting into that walnut brain... but you know that walnut brain can hold alot of information...
Hell look at how much data a flash drive can carry...
So you get them feeling back, getting them to give you that soft feel before you start down... get them listening... hearing you... then you start and you bump em when they pick up are fall forward.. but you gotta help, you cant sit there like a sack of potatoes.. You gotta shift your weight back to help them get to the hind...
The next item is leg...
OMG... how much a little makes a difference. To be able to steer your horse form your calf is wonderful... this is a new thing for me as I come from the sloppy cowboy school where the leg hangs there and the reins do all the work...
but what if you could build in sensitivity in your horse so that they could move off your calf... well then its only a matter of time before they move off your seat...
hmmm
but sisters and brothers that takes work...
lots of it...
lots of worrying about where those feet are... being particular about each step...
I know there is a clinic coming up with Buck .. I know last time he asked a group of the students to all line up.. then he ask them ok you yonkers.. ( not sure what the hell a yonker is?!) ride to me, doing a serpentine without your reins...
You wanna know how many out of 20 students could do that.....
You wanna know how jealous I was of the 1.... LOL.... green baby green!!
So much to do...
HiHo!
