Sure each horse is going to be a little different...
Some will be lighter, faster, quicker, smarter, eager then others..
Just like humans..
Some horses due to handling will be spooky, flightly, fighty or just plain dull or dead...
Agreed...
But to say a horse is different, so your going to handle them or give them the keys to the castle, or use that as excuse as to why your horse can not do x,y or z... well go pander it to someone else..
I am not a horse trainer, I dont need to stroke your ego...
I can tell you what I think..
Salt in your eye, then hell I am sorry, but grow up, smell the roses and learn how to work with your horse.
Case in Point...
A lady was talking to me, telling me that her horse is fine the first time she saddles him, but when she goes to saddle him again, he is bad...
So therefore only the first saddling will ever be good... So the horse is special and she is ok with the second saddling sucking...
And her reason?
The horse is special.
The human is special, special needs.
The horse, is getting a different feel from the person the second time... Now maybe the first time she pulls out only the saddle blanket, and the horse is fine with that blanket..
yet when she puts the saddle on him, maybe she thumps him with the stirrups, maybe she scares him, maybe she tightens the cinch to quick and hurts him, whatever, but the horse is associating that....
Seeing the saddle?
Seeing the pad?
Seeing the human ???????
with pain, with discomfort....
Like a young rider that was hanging out with me yesterday, I asker her to mount her pony...
Well when she tried he tried to bit her...
Well I said to her, he associates you with pain.. so he is trying to protect himself...
Kinda hurt her feelings, I know, she loves her pony...
But she has to learn how to handle the pony in way that the pony wants to be around her...
LOL the other day a lady comes up to me
"Should I train my horse with a yoga ball?"
I am watching her ride her horse... and I say..
" Well I dont see many yoga balls on the trail, so maybe I would try working with a tarp first?"
While we are talking the horse is chew chew chew on the bit...
And then I say.. " I may instead try to figure out why your horse is doing that first.. "
Silly humans? Do I look like a trainer? Do I look like someone who is going to kiss your ass?
I am going to tell you, based on what my teacher is helping me learn my VIEW of the world...
You can take it or leave it...
Ok so on to other things..
Miss M....
Things for me were not improving with Miss M.. She was still lost, still not hunting me up, still frantic...
So I started to break it down..
Started to get her busy, started to get her thinking about my ideas.. Started her working on her feet, I could see the brace, see where I would get in trouble..
And then I would provide time for her after we worked, where I could take the mental pressure off her.. Tie her out, and I would walk away and dink around, practice roping, whatever...
Give her a breather where I was not bugging her...Let things soak..
As my trainer said to me, based on what Tom said to someone at one time while she was around..
"I think that little horse would like a drink of water, why don't you take them to their stall and let them drink " ...
Or think as the case may be..
So with Miss M, I am working to get to the point where she is not frantic..
She is frantic because she is unsure...
She will slow down, when she gets more sure...
Thats what I am looking for, that is what I am working for...
For her to be sure... for her to feel secure, with me...
So the other day I am riding her in the pony arena, and she is tearing off one direction then another, the day guy comes down the hill, the bird flaps in the tree, the workers bang on something.. and I just ride her.. and try to just keep her directed without getting in her way..
"if you need to move Miss M I am here.. "
" I am going to try to stay with you "
" we are in it together "
"Nothing is going to hurt you"
" I am here.. , we are golden "
"golden "
" thats my girl "
"feel of me "
" reach "
" stop, back up "
" perfect "
Hi Ho!

Performance horses are unique to each other. God made them different just like He made us humans. That's good, because different horses accommodate different riders.
